well, we went to city hall at 12:30 and waited in a very very long line. I would estimate at close to 800-1000 couples (not including friends and family). It was quite a sight, hundreds of people, waiting in line for a chance of a lifetime, something they've waited for all their lives.. so what was a few more hours.
3 1/2 hours later, right when we were just about 20 couples away from the door, they closed the doors. Most of the work was being done by volunteers today, both city workers volunteering their time and people who were married yesterday who came today to help (data processing, forms, etc). They could only get to 400 couples today. We were disappointed. My brother and my parents came, as did three friends, and we all waited in line for 3 1/2 hours.
but they gave us 'ticket's for tomorrow so that we could go to the head of the line. so.. tomorrow we are going to the head of the line and we WILL be married. And our parents and brother will come again as will our friends. And our friends who adopted twin boys emma's age are going to get married with us.. it will be an even bigger party.
Let me tell you about today. it was, and I do not say this lightly, amazing, emotional and historic. Thousands of people waiting in line in an amazing act of civil disobedience. Who would have thought that getting married was an act of protest... still, the atmosphere was joyful, almost giddy at time. Gay couples there with their children (even my brother commented on how many gay couples there were with children, he never expected..), with their friend, with their parents and families. Cars honked their horns in celebration and support all afternoon long, people danced, children played.
we were getting married, all hundreds of us.
My brother and our friends waited with us the entire time, we played with Emma, got Pizza, talked to our line neighbors, people passed out candy and forms.
we were disappointed in the end, but the experience itself was wonderful....and... we will continue our line tomorrow and be married.
over a 1,000 couples have been married so far, probably a 1,000 more before tuesday (the court hearing for an injunction).
now to some photos to keep you happy till tomorrow :)...
like I said, the lines were loooong...
stretching all the way around the city hall:
all the way around..
though Emma and Daddy (and the rest of us) had fun and pizza...
someone actually left a wedding dress out if someone needed it:
many more photos of the lucky couple and wedding party tomorrow!!

We'll keep an eye out - we're heading over the bridge tomorrow (harried mom and 4 kids - you won't be able to miss us :)). They boys and I made cards to pass out to people tomorrow and a small tin of mini meringues (Trader Joes :)).
I am so extraordinarily happy, giddy, excited and thrilled. Maybe Jamie and I will decide to tie the knot now - it was always something we disdained but seeing the lust for marriage after eons of discrimination puts marriage in a whole new light.

I just joked with my other half that I am so glad we went down on Thursday, since I get really unhappy and not nice when I have to stand in line for very long. The pictures are great and I may head down tomorrow just to watch the crowds. Congratulations!!!!!!

I'm so certain that you are now officially married that I feel compelled to offer up a toast:
AN OLD IRISH WEDDING BLESSING.
May God be with you and bless you.
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness.
From this day forward.
Salut!
