Is there hope in South Dakota?

A poll in South Dakota shows a narrow lead for the OPPONENTS of the anti-gay amendment in that state. 47% of likely voters will vote against the amendment to discriminate against gays and lesbians, 46% will vote for it. Wow, that is the FIRST time in the two dozen states that have or are now voting on one of these hate amendments that a poll shows the amendment might actually fail. In South Dakota. One can only hope. (that link up there also links to the anti-amendment organization in SD you can help with a little money ... or footwork/phone work if you have time)

Straight parents

One of the biggest arguments the hate groups of the religious right like to use against gay parenting/adoption is that we will hurt/abuse/neglect our children. Of course, they have no actual facts that support this and the data suggests the exact opposite. But since when has truth invaded in their hateful world view? And of course they will use any rare anecdotal opporunity of a gay man or woman doing wrong to impugn the other millions of gay men and women in the world. The whole "Foley" incident is a prime example, Tony Perkins of the hategroup "Family Research Council" used the Foley to "show" that "homosexual men are more likely to abuse children than straight men". That's crap. By that logic I would have to conclude that straight mothers are more likely to kill their children than lesbian mothers because, well, stories of mothers killing their own children appear in the news _all the time_. But I don't believe that straight mothers are at ALL likely to kill their own children, quite the contrary. But apparently Tony Perkins uses that kind of logic, so he must believe it.

Gay Marriage Strengthens All Marriages

Anti-gay marriage groups and individuals (like Stanley Kurtz, like to use very bad statistics to "prove" that 'gay marriage' will weaken marriage. Even though others have pointed out their errors, they stick by their false arguments (surprised?). Now a new study comes out that shows the opposite (as gay marriage advocates have been arguing for years)...

Faith communities in places you'd not expect to look

I've discussed this before, we are seeking a faith community to become apart of. We have considered United Church of Christ, Episopalian and Unitarian Universalist congregations in the area. We've attended several wonderful congregations in each of these traditions and have heard of others that friends go to that we might try. We are being a bit picky, I admit.. Christian but liberal, glbt-friendly, ethnically and otherwise diverse, has children, a good size but not too big... ok.. a bit picky. When we find the congregation we feel at home at, we'll 'know' it. Interestingly though, our Mamas and Papas group had a Saturday discussing faith and spirituality and when/how/if we talk with or raise our children in a faith tradition. Guy was going through the criteria of what we were looking for when someone there suggested a congregation we hadn't considered before:

Coming Out: Tearing Down the Closet 5of 5)

And now to complete the story, part 5: tearing it all down. Wow, this series was long, but it felt great to write. At the end of this one I'm going to say a few words about and to closeted gay men and women today....

A lesson of the closet

Does Haggard think we are stupid? He has 'admitted' to buying drugs from the prostitute, but he threw them away he says (Clintonesque or what? "I didn't inhale"). Interesting that, because there are at least two calls recorded asking for the drugs on two separate occasions. Change his mind about throwing away? He admits that the prostitute gave him a massage (after denying he ever met the man), but that he didn't have sex. Is he channelling Clinton? "I didn't have sex with that woman" defense. How arrogant can he be? I have very little sympathy for him. It's one thing to be closeted, it's another to use the closet to attack and demonize other gay men and women, while enjoying your own priviledge. A sad and pathetic hypocrite if this is all true (which every hour it is becoming apparent that it is). But do you know who I have great sympathy for?

In 'coming out' counter point

There are a rash of outing stories of closeted legislators and pastors lately, all sad, pathetic and proving that the closet is hell on everyone. Yet, the changing landscape in our country, with more rights, more acceptance and more information, there has also been a rash of well-known young men and women coming out on their own, before the closet makes their lives miserable and the lives around them miserable. Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Houser, now many other acting jobs), J.R. Knight of Grey's Anatomy and Lance Bass have all come out in the last month or so. But it's not just actors, there are a lot of openly gay men and women running for political office and as I said earlier a LOT more LBGT families have been coming out in the census and their daily lives. Someday, hopefully sooner than later, being in the closet.. even for conservative Republicans... will be a thing of the past. We'll look back at it as the strange miserable thing that it is and wonder how anyone could have done it. The religious right want to return us to the closet and lock the door. It's too late.

Liberal to a point

And the point is San Francisco. I'm liberal, till I vote in San Francisco. Then I'm conservative. Or at least in comparison.

Emma's recipe

Emma created her own dish the other day. We were watching a cooking show the other day (Emma loves them) and she decided she wanted to go to the kitchen and make something. So, here it is:

Bad, Citizen Parent, Bad.

So I voted today as did a lot of people. As always, I vote 'conservative' in San Francisco, 'moderate' in California state offices and 'Liberal' in federal offices (well, in comparison to others in those areas). Looks like at least the tenant 'buyout' initiative is failing. Anyway, our ballot was TEN pages long. Yikes. Didn't even count the number of state and local referendums.. and then there were things like the state insurance commissioner (my first Republican vote in 8 years... interesting, I actually read and heard a lot about that race. He was reasonable and well-qualified. The Democrat had no experience and is just job hunting.. since he was term-limited out). Anyway, I TOTALLY forgot about the school board. Bad Parent. That is the one race my vote makes some difference (since there are so many candidates, and so few votes) and one that has an direct effect on our lives (hey, the decide school closings, school curriculum, etc). Well, there's an argument for absentee ballots, I would have had time to stop and think and read. Didn't have that chance in the polling place. Bad me. (At least Guy made some informed choices, I just left mine blank)

Supper Talk: Election Edition, good news, eh news.

So the election was last night, didn't ya know? So supper talk will be about the election :). There is good news of course, in general and for gay rights, and some not so good news. More of that in the 'read more'. So, what are we having for our supper? Well, leftovers. I have to go to a conference this week and have tons to do. So, we are having leftover pomegranate chicken. I'm used an italian version that uses cream, but this recipe will be the one I try next. I really have grown to love the taste of pomegranate and as a marinade for fish and chicken, it really has turned out great. Emma even liked it :D, though of course she liked the mushroom risotto much better (rice or noodles... she'd eat them till she exploded). Ready for a deluge of supper talk? Then click read more:

Middleton Reunion, paradox and irony

Friday morning I'm leaving for the Middleton Reunion. It is a reunion of the descendents of Middleton Place, a plantation near Charleston South Carolina that was the birthplace of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, presidents of the Continental Congress, revolutionary soldiers and several governors of that state, of whom I (maternal line) am a direct descendent.

They were also slave-holders. This is the beginning of the irony and paradox.. only the beginning...

There are gonna be some changes 'round here...

Or not. We are going through some major transitions here at home. Haven't written much about them because well... those transitions might not actually happen. Limbo is fun isn't it? So what are they? Follow me to read more...

Happy Thanksgiving!

We are having around 18 people over, three of my brothers and their families and my mother and stepfather on my favorite holiday. Of course, we'll be having turkey with two kinds of stuffing (sage/sausage and cornbread/pecan) with potatoes, sweet potatoes, greenbeans, etc... apple, pumpkin and pecan pies. We are also adding crab to the feast. Apparently it's a San Francisco tradition, so we thought we'd add it. And then we are going to the Sound of Music Sing-a-Long on Friday, THAT is what Emma is really looking forward too. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! (sorry for the lack of posts, between being busy and my host's server keeps going down, I haven't been able to post :(... Back on schedule after the holiday weekend).
