Flirting with Vegetarianism

A commenter, Silph, asked if Emma was still a vegetarian. He was referencing this post where we realized Emma would not eat meat.

Well..

She remained vegetarian for months. I even considered switching the whole family (and my cooking) to being vegetarian.

And then Thanksgiving came a year or so ago and it all changed as drastically as it had when she switched. Funny thing, we were at my mother’s house and they saw live wild turkey in their yard for the first time in 20 years… and Emma loved it. But she also ate turkey.. and loved it. From that day forward she became a carnivore again. I’m surprised I didn’t mention it, but after searching I couldn’t find a reference to it. But sure enough. She eats meat as readily as she used to be repulsed by it. It all happened on Thanksgiving day 2005.

Ironic too, since Thanksgiving day 2002 was the first day in her life she ate solid food (mashed squash, mashed turkey and rice cereal). She loved the first and last, but wasn’t as excited about the turkey. Then, three years later she switched.

Now, the dinners I mentioned in the last post Silph was referring too are a bit more meat than we are used to eating (I usually could 4 of 7 meals a week vegetarian, breakfast and lunch are almost always vegetarian), but we have some people in our house we are feeding who are meat and potato people from Eastern Europe :) . Trying to make them feel comfortable :) .

And… just the yesterday, in Emma’s continuing quest to know everything :) , she asked where ‘hamburger’ comes from. We explained it came from a cow. She wanted to know _how_. So, in the spirit of answering her questions briefly, truthfully and to the level of her understanding, we said that they kill the cow, cut it up and then sell it in the store.

Her expression was one of distaste.. “yucky” would be here word. (and frankly, when I put it that way, it doesn’t sound tasty :) .

So, we’ll see. She was silent after that, which means she was processing the information and would be asking another question.. right about …

we’ll let you know. We’re moving closer to being vegetarians anyway (exceptions will always be thanksgiving, christmas eve and easter :D ), we’ll see what she is thinking soon I’m sure :D

    Or not..

I remember going with Brian’s kindegarten class to a sheep ranch. It was a small place, really set up for field trips. They sheared a sheep, showed them how wool was prepared and spun, and let the kids play with the lambs. Brian loved the lambs. He had also loved the leg of lamb we had eaten recently.

After playing with them for an hour he asked if they sold lamb to eat there too.

He had no problem with the concept at all.
