Supper Talk: insurance

Supper! I hadn’t told ya, but we have a family (3 people) staying in our house for a couple weeks. They speak no English and have never been to the U.S. before (and whose view of American food is, I’m sure, McDonalds and canned food. So far my suppers have hit four out of four (spaghetti, meatloaf, chicken pot pie, roast), but those have been ‘traditional’… today’s supper is ‘taco night’ and tomorrows is crab cakes and hoppin john, we’ll see how those go over (no real recipes for taco night.. see more at the bottom, recipe for tomorrow’s supper tomorrow.
Well, I told ya. The virtual world SecondLife proves that life imitates art. Jason of Positive Liberty reports on a ‘hate crime’ in SecondLIfe where a virtual mosque is bombed. He draws parallels between this and that and the importance of private property. What I find interesting, is this article which reports that real-world institutions have a virtual space in SecondLife, institutions like IBM, Reuters, BBC, political parties and charities. I tell you, you need to read Otherland to be insured that you’ll understand where our world is headed
.
Talking about insurance, our health insurance bill went up 21% this year. That will make it almost double since we started with Kaiser in 2002. I can tell you our income hasn’t doubled. We haven’t had any change in our health since then. If this continues, by 2020 our health insurance costs will exceed our income.
Well, I do agree with the president on one thing: he called for the passage of the Genetic Discrimination act. (would make it illegal to discriminate in insurance, employment, etc based on genetic makeup). Of course that act has been unpassed for 12 years (well, the senate passed it 98-0, it has languished in the House. Is the umpteenth time a charm? (it just got reintroduced). I hope so, because otherwise health insurance costs will really rise. I haven’t seen any other solution other than this bill.
If you haven’t seen this music video, well.. you have missed either the most absurd and hateful music video in a long time, or you have missed an amazingly well put-together parody of anti-gay religious exgay movement. It seems no one is certain. Everyone seems to be talking about it in the blogosphere.
oh, totally different subject…(as if that stops what we talk about at supper time).. if you have had a bad experience with an adoption agency (unethical, etc), read this. via Peter’s Cross Station.
Well, that should do it…
today is taco night. Basically, ground turkey (cooked of course) and fixins (chopped tomatoes, onions, lettuce, salsa, refried beans, cheese, olives, tabasco sauce, sour cream) and torillas (flour, soft). Make your own.

I’ve finally caught up with your wonderful posts after a much too long absence. Somehow you disappeared from bloglines. Conspiracy? I’ll put you right back.
Just saying hello and letting you know my son Tim is now reading your blog and loves it.
He tried to leave a comment last night but the net wouldn’t cooperate.
Welcome back Ann! (and welcome Tim!)
Bloglines died because my site was destroyed and I had to move it to another directory.
I’m trying to figure out how to make those old feeds/bloglines work to let old readers know I’m back.
Btw — and forgive me if you mentioned it before — but is Emma comfortable eating meat again? (You mention meatloaf and chicken pot pie and turkey tacos). The only reason I asked is because I remember a post called “Our Littlest Vegetarian”, and remember that you wrote that she even knew ground beef was.. well.. beef (I didn’t as a kid!).
Flirting with Vegetarianism
A commenter, Silph, asked if Emma was still a vegetarian. He was referencing this post where we realized Emma would not eat meat. Well…..
Supper Talk: short updates.. and faith
Today is crab cakes and hoppin john! Yippee! (some of my favorite foods). So, this is a short supper talk… some updates from previous posts or suppertalks… then we eat… This whole Donnie Davies and the hoax/not hoax hate video…
