white embyros & free market eugenics

Shannon at Peter's Cross station takes a fascinating perspective on something I wrote about in a post a few days ago in Free Market Eugenics and then mentioned briefly in a Supper Talk. It was the latter, where it was reported about a woman selling pre-made embryos that she takes her cue from and writes about it from the perspective of race (it's part one of two!).

It's a fascinating read. I came to that news from the perspective of a biologist interested in ethics, but like her I am part of a transracial family and her perspective is one that adds a lot to the discussion, race, community, capitalism. Reading her entry has me thinking of this in a even broader perspective and I'm going to think about this a bit more and write a response, not a counter because I agree with what she writes, more of a dialog... what those thoughts made me consider more deeply.

It is this last comment in her post that has me thinking much more about this, especially in the light of my somewhat flippantly serious title of "Free Market Eugenics"

If we evaluated the ethics of our technological abilities according to community logic, rather than capitalism’s logic, what would our families look like?

I'll think more about this and get back to you :).

Have you read Stanley Hauerwas, Trey?
He's a communitarian ethicist with some interesting articles (old ones I read ages ago, anyway) on bioethics from a communitarian perspective.
