Always a step ahead...

pick-up sticksFrom an early age, Emma has proven to us that she will always be one step ahead. Well, she's not one to be thwarted in her determination.

A couple days ago Guy was taking her to a birthday party. Emma wasn't happy that they were giving pick-up sticks to the kid for his birthday. She wanted them. When told they were not for her, she threw a minor fit. Well, the rule in our house is that if as soon as you cry, whine or throw a fit for something, that will guarantee you will not get it when you want it. She didn't. Later, she kept asking for them. Nicely. Politely and with a smile. We explained to her that maybe she will get some for her birthday in two months (which might as well be two years to her), if she asks politely and is patient.

So today...She was playing in her room. We had just come home from a friendly gathering and brought home the extra refreshments and acccesories (cups, etc), which included those thin, long wooden coffee stirrers.

She asked for them and took them to her table. She then got her paints out and preceded to paint them all different colors.

She came out to the kitchen, grabbed me by the hand and said she wanted to show me something.

"Look, I am making pick-up sticks!" She announced proudly and with not a little satisfaction.

Yep, if you can't get what you want from the parents. Just make it. Enterprising child.

I tell ya, we are in trouble.
