Supper Talk: Profanity in all its forms.. and living long

So supper tonight? Grilled salmon w/ tomato & onion, sauted swiss chard w/pinenuts. Recipe to follow.

So, NewsBucket has tested to see who uses the '7 words' (you know, the naughty words you can't use on TV) more often, the left blogs or the right blogs and found that the left blogs use profanity 18 times more . But there is a glaring methodological error. He took the top 10 blogs of each side and did a search on terms. DailyKos found 146,000 instances of those profanities for example. But that is what made me realize _immediately_ that he made a huge mistake in this 'comparison.' ...

Anyone even remotely acquainted with right vs. left blogs will realize that left blogs, for whatever reason, have a much larger comment/diary base overall and are much more loquacious. Take the top two for example DailyKos vs. LGF. Both allow comments. Looking at the last 10 or so posts, DailyKos had about 200 comments per post, LGF had about 100. But that isn't where all the comments are on DailyKos. Look at the diaries. DailyKos has HUNDREDS of diaries a day... just look at the recommended dairies at any moment in time, there will be over 2,000 comments total. hmm, about 20-100 times the number of posts and comments on DailyKos than on LGF. That's a rough estimate, but you get the picture. If you say 100 times the amount of words, you are going to say 100 times the number of a specific word. It's not the total number of profane words that gives you a true picture of profanities, but the number of profanities in relation to the total number of words. On that it looks like the lefty blogs aren't any more profane. I'd like someone to actually do that! Does suggest something though... the left blogosphere allows a bit more freedom to allow people to speak... hmm... (hat tip: AndrewSullivan)

Here's an interest test to add to the one above (after that error is fixed). Ann Coulter, speaking to the American Conservative Union called Edwards a "Faggot." Nice. Well, do the same study, but instead use the N word, "fa##ot", R##head, etc. Wonder who will come out looking like they use a heck of a lot of profanity?! Even without the correction above! (hat tip: andrew sullivan.. strange.. I'm posting a lot more of stuff I get from him lately.. is he coming closer to my position or me his? :/ or both?.. don't worry, there's enough I disagree with him on still, just not lately:).

now the rest...

Well, here is an interesting graph, the chance of dying from various causes (in the US). Of course they add up to 1. You WILL die. But if you can reduce the chance of all the big ones, your chance of living longer will increase. (that and eat like a bird). Hmm, so, solve my sleep apnea, exercise and eat right I can reduce the top ones well.. wear a seat belt...

of course I could always die from some random thing. But always good to reduce the chance of thsoe things you can :)

Interesting site of phrase origins posted by Terrance.

Wow, a 107 year old blobber (well, that's what she called it .. a blogger :). Maybe if I work hard on that reducing the risk thing I'll be blogging at 107... LOL.

Recipe is simple:

brush salmon steak with olive oil
sprinkle with salt and pepper
slice one small onion thinly
place onion on salmon to cover
brush onion lightly with olive oil

broil for about 10 minutes or till done, not too close, about 4-5 inches from top.

per salmon steak:
chop one tomato
add one tablespoon soy sauce
add one tablespoon chopped fresh basil
add one teaspoon pepper
mix

Spoon tomato mixture over salmon. Spoon any remaining liquid over that.

yum... and good for you... lower that risk of heart disease :D

Ann Coulter use the word "faggot" when referring to John Edwards. That would be bad enough I guess, but we expect that from her. It was the reaction in the crowd that really gets me. Cheering and whooping at the... [Read More]
