Colorado passes Same-sex adoption law

The Colorado State Senate just passed a law allowing same-sex couples to adopt. The state House already passed it. Governor Ritter (D) has said he will sign the bill.

Though the state voters last year narrowly defeated a civil union law (maybe next time :) , lawmakers said this wasn’t about marriage, it was about protecting children. Which kind of highlights the problem with the anti-marriage equality arguments that marriage is to protect children thus we shouldn’t allow same-sex couples marriage rights (or even civil union rights)… and yet 30% of GLBT couples have children.

So, they won’t allow same-sex couples to marry to “protect the children”, yet.. children are going unprotected because they won’t allow same-sex couples to marry.

And when an adoption law is proposed that would help legally protect those children in families of GLBT parents (but says nothing of the parents getting married or ‘unionized’), they oppose that too.

I’m not sure it’s about protecting children as much as it is a distaste for GLBT people. Otherwise their arguments wouldn’t have to go through such logic gymnastics.

Well, I’m glad Colorado is now helping those families. They have joined a handful of other states (which make up a huge portion of the U.S. population incidently) like California, New Jersey and others.

The circular reasoning drives me nuts.

Meantime though, I suppose we should rejoice over the victories as they happen.
