Imus is fired, now what?

CBS fired Imus today because of his sexist, racists remarks about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Of course this is just the latest in a long history of racist, anti-catholic, anti-semitic, sexist remarks from that show. Some on the right like Michelle Malkin have suggested this is hypocritical since black recording artists (rap and hip-hop) do it all the time, but…

as Pam on Pam’s House Blend reminds us, many have been fighting that sexist, racist music for a long time. Just difficult getting the news media to listen. Now maybe they will. And as Andrew Sullivan says, the two (Imus and hip-hop) aren’t quite morally equivalent. Still, I agree with his reader:

I want my beautiful granddaughter to grow up in a world that can celebrate her loveliness without seeing her as something to be “bagged”.

It’s what we want for our daughter. So yes, I too am very glad to see Imus gone.

Now, before my daughter stops listening to musicals (with all the stereotypes that we have to balance there!) and starts listening to popular music, lets also, as his reader suggests, get rid of the R. Kellys of the recording industry. Take back the music.

This isn’t about censorship. I would never suggest they be ’silenced’ by law. This is about the market. We, as consumers, have as much right to demand that companies not sell us sexist, racist, homophobic, anti-catholic, anti-semitic, etc, etc crap as we do to demand they do (because, frankly someone is demanding they sell it by buying it).
