PG Rating...

Online Dating

Mingle2 - Online Dating

That's my blog's rating according to this site. That's because it found 4 "deaths," 3 "gays," and a "lesbian." Some sites I read got an NC-17 (yikes!), and R, but as Family Pride points out:

Though the website’s rating system is meant to be humorous (and should be taken with a grain of salt), it does speak to the power of words. Specifically, words that relate to sexuality.

And I'm sure my rating would have been higher (lower?) depending on the week and what I'm talking about :)

Idiot (wannabe) Lawyer

No, that is not reduntant. This man sues over gay marriage question on bar exam in Massachusetts. He barely failed the bar exam in that state. He was just over two points (270 needed) shy of passing. Why is he suing?

Fun in Utah

So, this last weekend was spent in Utah. Utah is a great place to spend the weekend. Really. It's beautiful, fascinating and a culture apart.

So, here is what we did... shakespeare, "some say the world will end by fire," wet-grass-cooled theater (hmm, no link for that)...

Gays and Hindus... sharing something in common

The American Family Association's disdain and bigotry is what they share.

The AFA's bigotry towards gay people is well-documented.

And apparently they have a tolerance level ladder and Hindu's are high on that list (probably right after gays and atheists)...

Why do I say that? Because today I got an action alert from the AFA positively apoplectic about the fact that a Hindu will be giving the prayer to start a US Senate session. Why?

R Family Cruise (RepublicofT edition)

Ok, it _can't_ be near as fun as our R Family Cruise to Alaska (kidding... kinda ;), but Terrance has been blogging his family's trip on a current R Family Cruise (one that our friends are on... so Terrance if you see Chuck and Patrick with their son Nathan, say hi for us!). It's fun reading :).

Hawaii, take 4.

We've spent part of every year in Hawaii for a few years now. It's cheaper. Really it is. Between kid's camps, housing and other expenses, we can save a few thousand dollars for every month we stay here. And now that ATA flies direct to Hilo (where the house we stay at is) for about 300 roundtrip...

So, there are worse life choices we have to make ;-).

And we love Hawaii, especially the big island. Though you wouldn't know it from this morning...

Memories of Hawaii...

Just thought I'd show you the house we stay at in Hawaii. We have a lot of great memories here, though not all wonderful (like the dog and house eave and papaya attacks).

Our avocado tree is brimming with fruit... I think I'll have to revisit the avocado cream pie success.

btw, Emma had a great day at camp.

It ain't the worms

Breaking my summer silence to put do my part to silence some silliness. Worms aren't adding global warming-causing gases to the environment. Yes, that seems the latest culprit. Andrew Sullivan and others are reporting this latest bit of silliness. Solar activity was thoroughly discredited as a possible example lately, so I guess some global warming deniers (Sullivan is not one) are going to grab on to this worm straw. Sigh.

It's easy to discredit. There is a very important difference between a worm's (or a cow's) gas and the gas you put in your car. The former is carbon-neutral, they are putting carbon into the atmosphere that was already cycling in the environment (it's taken up later from the atmosphere by plants, etc). The gas from your car (or house or airplane...) is spewing carbon that has not been cycling in the environment for hundreds of millions of years. We are adding extra carbon (as CO2) to the atmosphere the environment can't recycle easily, worms aren't.

Hawaii Update

Still here :) and now Guy is too.

Some updates. My work schedule is from about 5:30am to 2:30pm. Emma's YWCA camp scedule is from around 8am to 2:30pm. Guy's is similar, but more piecemeal. Emma goes to bed around 7:30 to 8 and we go to bed around 9:30. That's Hawaii.. where the sun goes down early and comes up early.. you kind of set you schedule to it.

It's given us the chance to go the beach 4-5 times now...

cow hunting

You think I jest? I don't. Hawaii has no indigineous land mammals (only bats). They have feral pigs that got loose from the Polynesians that first came to these islands thousands of years ago. They have rats that came on the ships with the European colonizers. They later brought mongoose to get rid of the rats (but of course forgot to consider that rats are nocturnal and mongoose aren't... so the mongoose went after native species of birds instead :( ). There are even some feral horses in the north part of the big island.

And feral cows. Apparently, a few dozen cow-generations ago, a bunch of cows given as a gift to a Hawaiian royal were allowed to roam free... and how have become feral and quite adapted to the tropical rain forests here (a bit more and a video in the continuation)

Hawaii Sunday

We spent our last sunday in Hawaii yesterday. It was a very nice day...

We spent the afternoon snacking, reading and playing in the waves at Hapuna Beach State Park.

And then we went to Merriman's (our second time there) for supper.

Those are two things you really should mark on our calendar if you make a trip to the big island... There are a lot of others...
