Hawaii Update

Still here :) and now Guy is too.

Some updates. My work schedule is from about 5:30am to 2:30pm. Emma’s YWCA camp scedule is from around 8am to 2:30pm. Guy’s is similar, but more piecemeal. Emma goes to bed around 7:30 to 8 and we go to bed around 9:30. That’s Hawaii.. where the sun goes down early and comes up early.. you kind of set you schedule to it.

It’s given us the chance to go the beach 4-5 times now…

She has made a big leap in the water (figuratively and literally). She hated even a drop of water on her face, now she likes to go under the water. She is much more comfortable than before about being in deep water (as long as she has floaties). She really is enjoying it.

4 beach trips were to a local black sand beach (Richardson’s) which is small and sheltered, great for just playing around.. and the added bonus of having sea turtles come up to sure early evenings.

1 trip was to Hapuna Beach State Park. It’s one of those big white sandy beaches on the other side of the island (this side tends to have cliffs, small black/green/red sand beaches tucked between rocks, etc). The waves that day were quite big (4-6 feet!)… Emma LOVED them. She laughed hysterically as they washed over us both and we tried to jump over them. We are going back this weekend, this time with a bogie board.

What she doesn’t love is YWCA camp. We don’t know why exactly, but she cries every morning and tries to negotiate her way out of going. At first I thought it was the transition and the fact that Guy wasn’t here. But it hasn’t changed. She hasn’t made friends there either. Perhaps it’s because most of the kids are older, perhaps it’s because they knew each other beforehand (briefly), but our normally extremely social kid just doesn’t want to go….

in fact, several times now she has insisted we return to San Francisco, going so far as to pack my toiletries and take the to the car and insist we drive to the airport NOW. This is a huge contrast to our time in Utah where she wished outloud that God would move Utah to San Francisco so it’d be closer. Of course in Utah she has grandma, grandpa and a large extended family.

Unfortunately, we have to work. Guy is going to take a couple days off next week, but she has three more days at YWCA… and the sobbing and negotiations aren’t fun for any of us, least of all Emma.

I was hoping that all the fun we are having at the beach (and she really is enjoying it tremendously) would make her like this trip better. We even had a cookout here with some friends and their 7-year-old that Emma loves…

She still wants to go home.

Sigh.

Next time we come we’ll have to figure out a better plan… maybe a sibling ;-) .
