It ain’t the worms
Breaking my summer silence to put do my part to silence some silliness. Worms aren’t adding global warming-causing gases to the environment. Yes, that seems the latest culprit. Andrew Sullivan and others are reporting this latest bit of silliness. Solar activity was thoroughly discredited as a possible example lately, so I guess some global warming deniers (Sullivan is not one) are going to grab on to this worm straw. Sigh.
It’s easy to discredit. There is a very important difference between a worm’s (or a cow’s) gas and the gas you put in your car. The former is carbon-neutral, they are putting carbon into the atmosphere that was already cycling in the environment (it’s taken up later from the atmosphere by plants, etc). The gas from your car (or house or airplane…) is spewing carbon that has not been cycling in the environment for hundreds of millions of years. We are adding extra carbon (as CO2) to the atmosphere the environment can’t recycle easily, worms aren’t.
