Daddy, Papa and Me

An unconventional family in a conventional world, taking notes

American Travel

Andrew Sullivan has been gathering bad experience stories of American custom/border officials. He posted one about a same-sex couple having troubles, Dan Savage wrote in to say:

We’ve had passport control officers roll their eyes, glare at us, look down at DJ and slowly shake their heads. And DJ understands everything — these people, these people in US government uniforms, think we did something wrong by adopting him. That there’s something illegitimate about his family.
The worst part, of course, is that we can’t say anything. We can’t defend ourselves or him or his family as we’re insulted and demeaned because God only knows what will happen if we get into an argument.

Read the whole thing.

The sad thing is that it’s true. Friends of ours had a horrible experience with American officials while going into Canada (from the American officials) where they were kept at the border for TWO DAYS, and we’ve had our own not-so-dramatic scenarios (more like Savage’s). But you really can’t do much can you? They control your freedom and family at that point, don’t they?

It really bites because if you piss them off, they can just completely mess with you.

I haven’t had to deal with anything like you but I’ve felt a bit of the frustration.
