Tooth Fairy Saga

o, a few days before Christmas, Emma lost her second tooth. She was ecstatic. She carried around all day and then carefully put it under her pillow for the tooth fairy.

Only the tooth fairy forgot to exchange it for a dollar. BAD tooth fairy.

The look on poor Emma's face as she was standing in the bedroom door, tears streaming down her face. She said, between sobs, that the tooth fairy forgot. She then recounted, between sobs, how she stayed up half the night checking to see if the tooth fairy had come and taken her tooth. She said she'd turn on the light when she thought she'd hear something, and then pretend to go to sleep.

She was SOOOO disappointed, no.. much stronger than that. Oh we felt so horrible for her and not so happy with the tooth fairy! (slap self ten times).

But it gets worse.

We told Emma that the tooth fairy probably feels pretty bad, so we were sure she'd leave something special. So Emma calmed down and anticipated the next day.

As she was preparing for bed she put her tooth down on the sink ledge, the tooth she'd been carrying around all day. Daddy came in to see her and saw a fleck of what looked like to be a piece of soap... and...

you guessed it, flicked it down the drain.

OH MY, the panic in her voice. She thought Daddy had picked it up, but when she realized he flicked it down the drain (and he realized what it was), the wailing and gnashing of teeth (or those left , was so horribly sad.

Oh this poor girl. It was all we could do to console her. We PROMISED the tooth fairy would understand.

She went to bed not very happy.

So, we got to working in the night. I wrote up a note from the tooth fairy (paraphrased here..):

"Dear Emma,
So sorry I missed last night! There were reindeer flying everywhere preparing for christmas and I had a difficult time getting anywhere. So, in apology, I'm going to leave two dollars for you.
You know what? I couldn't find your tooth!! I looked everywhere and finally found that it went down the drain! How in the world did it get down there?!?! Well, I had my seahorse friends help me look for it and we found it!! You must have had a bad day! I will talk to Santa and make sure he brings you something special.
Love you and brush your teeth!
The Tooth Fairy"

We put the two dollars in the flowered card and put it under her pillow. Then I took some red glitter and spread some in a line from window to her bed and then out to the kitchen and then into the bathroom to the sink.

Emma was so excited about the note, the money and the FAIRY DUST!! She made sure everyone, grandma, grandpa, uncle Scott and Radek saw the fairy dust and she explained everything to them.

When I read her the note and we got the the question "How in the world did it get down there?" She looked at Daddy and said with a big grin "Daaaaaddddddy"

Disaster averted.

Emma also did something very sweet. A couple days before she wanted to buy some planets you hang from the ceiling (she told Daddy that Pluto was her favorite planet, we didn't have the heart to tell her it's status was downgraded). She had saved up 20 dollars from 5 weeks allowance and her first tooth money, but she was 2 dollars short. We told her we'd get it if she paid us back from her next allowance. She agreed.

Right after getting her two dollars from the tooth fairy, she came into our room and, without reminding nor prompting, gave me the two dollars and said "This is for the the planets Papa"

Sometimes (usually) I am overwhelmed by this child.

That is one of the best toothfairy stories I've ever read. The toothfairy often forgets at our house, too. Thank Goodness for the wonder and forgiveness of children :)

What a sweet story! And I love how responsible she is with money too :)

I agree with ~E, that IS a FANTASTIC tooth fairy story! (Dramatic, too!). I loved how you and Guy worked extra-hard at doing something really sweet to make up for the tooth-fairy's forgetfulness (silly tooth fairy ;-) ! ), and how heavy dissapointment was turned around to be thrilled delight! Good job, you two!!

And the red glitter? awesome :-) I mean, the fact that made a detour into the washroom made the story so much more special than the usual tooth-fairy occurrence. thanks for writing up this good read :-)
