Deja vu

Apparently Emma had it yesterday. I was driving Emma home from School. We were talking about how clean the car was (Daddy just got it cleaned) and Emma said something about the school day and then said, with a bit of surprise in her voice:

"Did I dream this?"

I asked what she meant and she said that she dreamed that we were driving in the car talking about how clean it was and that everything was the same.

I asked some clarifying questions, does it feel like you did this before? Is it a strange feeling?

SHe said yes.

I told her she was experiencing deja vu. She asked me what it was and I told her no one knows, but it's a trick our mind plays probably. She said it's not nice that minds play tricks like that.

She's hit a milestone. Her brain is developing. Every month, sometimes days, you can almost seenew connections made in her brain. Now those connections are starting to cause that familiar feeling we've all gotten, deja vu.

Why do I find it so fascinating? I _know_ we humans feel and experience similar things, I _know_ how humans and other organisms develop. I understand the development stages of childhood.

But watching your child develop is just utterly fascinating. Like watching an experiment unfold before your eyes.

And it's happened billions of times before.

Just so amazingly awe-inspiring both in the singularity of watching this one beloved child unfold and the enormity of the thought that it's happened billions of times before and will a few billion times again.
