I've seen this used when talking about McCain, illustrating a point that voting for McCain will be asking for a third Bush term. The two are basically the same.
Pondering this today I thought to myself this isn't quite true.
Whereas I see Bush and his entourage from Cheney on down as incompetent (re: Katrina, Iraq War, environment, economy, etc) ideologues with a serious problem of moral turpitude (re: habeus corpus, torture, secrecy, etc), I have more trust in McCain as a man of greater moral standing and competence. I trust him more to surround himself with others of a better sort.
But on most issues, I don't see much of a difference at all. When it comes to foreign policy (elective wars, aversion to diplomacy), economic or even environmental (like Bush, McCain likes to talk 'environmental' now, but not walk it) issues, I see no substantial difference between Bush and McCain.
The Bush policies of the last eight years have been very poor, they have left us with inflation, deficits, unprepared for the rising cost of energy, ridiculous health costs, unprepared for the effects of climate change, a shrinking middle class, a horrible reputation around the world.. even with friends, reduced civil rights and to top it all off, a years-long unnecessary war that is costing hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars, soon trillions.
Very poor policies.
And they have been executed very poorly as the incompetence of Katrina and Iraq show.
So, we've had eight years of bad policies implemented badly.
With McCain, we'll get eight years of bad policies implemented well.
That. is. scary.
