Ma Prang, fruit for day 2 (among other things)

Trey | March 22, 2009

So, I had some Maprang today. What is Maprang? See at the end :) .

This morning I attended three talks on the origins of molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis, transmission dynamics and evolution and the effect on human contact network structure on the evolution of the influenza virus H5N1 (bird flu, I’m at the Genetics and Genomics of Infectious Disease conference). Translated: how it’s deadly, how it changes to be so and how humans are going to pass it around. Let me tell you, after last night’s talk from the Singapore health minister where she state “Singapore will be ground-zero for the next pandemic” and these talks… it makes it a bit surreal to be in Singapore :/.

Who cares, lets eat…

20 fruits in 20 days: Day 1, Dragonfruit

Trey | March 21, 2009

dragonfruitIf you’ve been reading, you’ll know I’m in Singapore, will be going to Malaysia next week, and then meeting up with Emma and Guy in Bali a week from now and then on to Korea.

On this trip, I have a small dilemma. Trying to stay on a health diet, reasonably portioned and losing weight while traveling is not easy. ESPECIALLY travel to foreign lands where the food it exotic, tasty and lots of it. So, I have a plan. I’ll try little bits of this here and there, but I’m also on a food quest: 20 fruits in 20 days. I can eat a LOT of fruit and not be just fine on that weightwatchers point scale… so.. I’ll be updating those here :) along with a few other updates…

On the other side of the Earth

Trey | March 20, 2009

That’s where I am. Well, I guess technically, I’m on the other side of the earth all the time for someone. But today, I’m on the other side of the Earth from those who live in the U.S. Well, not exactly, the exact other side would be somewhere near Venezuela. The opposite end of the Earth from where 90% of Americans live is.. the Indian Ocean, so technically, I’d have to take a boat South of here a couple thousand miles. But you get the picture… I’m far away.

Well, so far I’ve seen a very nice hotel room. Today is filled with work catching up on some unfinished projects, preparing for tomorrow’s workshop, meeting with the conference organizers, etc.

09-1I’m not going to have much time to get out of my hotel today. But it is a REALLY nice room (they conference organizers have paid for it), 900 sq ft, huge bath tub and separate shower, king size bed, separate living area.

Anyway, I do plan to go out and see the city. I’m getting oriented today and tomorrow is the workshop all day, but Sunday I have the afternoon free (the talks are not in my area of expertise or something useful for us), so a colleague and I are going to go 09-0explore street hawker food! He really wants to try durian and I want to try it again (had it once with Guy in Thailand).

I know Emma will be excited to try durian. Every night I used to tell a story of goldilocks and the three bears travelling to some part of the world (long story on how that got started) and after travelling to many places over many nights.. I told of them going to Thailand (elephant rides, thai massage, temples…) and ended up with them trying durian. Emma thought a fruit that smells like dirty diapers but tastes faintly of bubble gum was the most hilarious thing she’d ever heard of. I had to tell that story about a hundred times. When we get to Bali she’ll get to try some :D .

Oh, one other thing I just learned about durian. Our host here in Singapore (a scientist with the genome institute here) doesn’t like durian (imagine!?!) but she said that one is supposed to eat a mangosteen after eating durian to ‘equalize the digestion’. Didn’t know that :D . Well, guess we will have to do that! In fact, I might just spend an afternoon eating fruits of various sorts. I had one at breakfast today with a purple skin and white flesh with black seeds. Very pretty. Kinda bland but tasty. Interesting… don’t know what it was still. Need to take my camera down to breakfast tomorrow. You won’t believe the complimentary breakfast served at the hotel… not continental to say the least. I didn’t know what half of it was.

Anyway, my colleague and I will be going out to sample the unique street foods with influences of Chinese, Indian, Malay and other cultures. I’ll let you know how that goes. I’m just trying to make sure I can keep my tasting down to 30 points (weightwatchers :) . We’ll see.

I’ll have time later in the week to check out a few other places, China town, India town, etc.

White House Garden

Trey | March 19, 2009

3004867513_5bbf1f737d_oWell, looks like the campaign, Eat the View, to get the Obama’s to plant an organic vegetable garden, the first planted on the White House yard since Eleanor Roosevelt did, has paid off.

Michelle Obama is planning one as an educational and inspirational tool to encourage the rest of us to eat better, more local and more sustainably.

Girl Scout Cookies are in Season :D

Where in the world is Trey?

Trey | March 19, 2009

Well, you’ll notice the paucity of posts lately. I was getting ready for the big trip!

Right now I’m in Tokyo on my way to Singapore.

I’ll be in Singapore for 5 days at a scientific conference.

Then in Malaysia on a jungle trek for 4 days.

Then meet up with Guy and Emma for a relaxing 6 days in Bali…

Then we head off to Kyung Ju Korea for 6 days of exploring the ancient capital.

It should be fun :D

Breastfeeding: talk about selective reading

Trey | March 16, 2009

So, I just completed an article written by Hanna Rosin in the Atlantic Monthly: “The case against Breast-Feeding.” Having no real ball in this court ;) , but having been interested in the science a few years ago, I read it with interest. My take on it was that it seemed to be a bit reactionary. That’s fine. Our culture, any culture, does have it’s pushy moments. She seemed to have a chip on her shoulder about the ‘fascist’ breast-feeding advocacy in our culture and what it means in her life. She made a statement though, that from my reading of the research, seemed a bit mistaken:

The moral dilemma of a 6 year old (hint, it’s not much different)

Trey | March 9, 2009

chickenThere is one fast-food restaurant close to us, actually only 3 blocks away: a combo Taco Bell and KFC. Emma LOVES taco bell bean and cheese burritos. She asks for them all the time. We let her get some occasionally as a treat.

So, yesterday we were driving to a birthday party and there were protesters from PETA in front protesting the treatment of factory farm chickens (I actually agree, factory farm chickens are treated horrendously, so we buy our chicken from a local pasture-raised chicken farm :D ). We are SF that way ;) .
