I haven’t posted in a long time, trying to get that habit up again. But today’s California Supreme Court ruling upholding both Prop 8 and our marriages that happened in the short 5 months has me reeling from very mixed feelings.
Do you understand how strange, surreal and frustrating it feels to have to watch TV or read the internet to see if your marriage is valid? We have had to do that twice in the last few months, first, we watched as millions of strangers had the right to take away our rights at the ballot box, and they did (well, 52% of them), and now we watched as the Supreme Court decided, 7 more strangers, decided if we were worthy of equal protection.
The ruling upholds constitutionally-enshrined discrmination, but allows our marriage to stand. A strange and complicated place for the state to be. Our friends can’t get married, but we are. ALL heterosexuals can get married, 18,000 gay and lesbian couples are, but the other tens of thousands of future and current gay and lesbian couples can’t now. Talk about unequal treatment!
This battle is not over. We, I, will fight till ALL are equal before the law. EVERY ONE OF US.
(and can I add, after watching the budget battles, this etc… our state system of governing is broken)
