H1N1 (Swine) Flu, it’s baaaaack…

Trey | September 22, 2009

ili36_graphThe red line is this year’s flu incidence so far…from the CDC 2009 H1N1 Flu | 2009 H1N1 U.S. Situation Update.

If you are in a high-risk group (asthma, respiratory problems, elderly, etc), you should probably get a vaccination. A flu clinic locator can be found here.

The Czar Canard

Andrew Sullivan says it right, and quotes. Czars are nothing more than advisors, and the last president had more than this one. What’s the freaking big deal?

Iowa Poll: 92% of Iowans say gay marriage hasn’t affected them

Trey | September 21, 2009

Iowa Poll: Iowans evenly divided on gay marriage ban | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register.

Interesting, so about half of those who it has affected are probably gay, most of the reminder of those are probably family and friends of gay people and then there is a minute number who are just curmudgeons and HATE to see other people get something they have.

Yet, interestingly, 42% of the populace wants to ban gay marriage, even though they say it apparently doesn’t affect them one iota, or 92% of the rest of their neighbors. And the ones it does affect, it affects overwhelmingly positively. I really really don’t get opposition to marriage equality.

Vote No on 1 | Protect Maine Equality

Trey | September 18, 2009

Vote No on 1 | Protect Maine Equality.

The Maine legislature passed a law that gave marriage equality to all recently. The forces of discrimination have put a referendum on the ballot to strip marriages from married couples. Again, like California, they can not abide loving couples and families having the same rights and privileges they have. No matter how you parse or explain it away, it’s soft bigotry at best.

I’m having deja vu. The polls show it a dead heat, like California. Don’t let it take a step back, donate at the link above! Help get the word out.

Put this in the “Irony” file please

Well, they could have just taken the privately-funded taxis couldn’t they?

GOP Rep Who Suggested D.C. Metro Hurt 9/12 Turnout Voted Against Metro Funding

Brady’s office complained about a train shortage. “METRO did not prepare for Tea Party March!” he tweeted. “People couldn’t get on, missed start of march. I will demand answers.”

But earlier this year, Brady voted against the stimulus package. It provided millions upon millions of dollars for all manner of improvements to … the D.C. Metro.

Every House GOPer, of course, voted against the stimulus. Still, it’s a real head-spinner to bash a government-run system for failing to adequately serve an enormous anti-government protest after opposing government funding for it.

The man who changed Glenn Beck’s life

Trey | September 16, 2009

I knew Glen Beck was a Mormon, but there was something about it political philosophy (if you can call it that) and his interpretation of his faith that seemed vaguely familiar. CLEON SKOUSEN!  I had heard about that man when I first joined the church in the late 70’s. He was to the _extreme_ right, politically and theologically) in Mormon circles then. Well, apparently he is Glen Beck’s idol. Guy just sent me this article at Salon, very interesting reading:  Meet the man who changed Glenn Beck’s life.

Which explains a lot. If that is where the Republican party is taking itself, well, sad for the party and the country.

The CORRECT way to make cinnamon toast

Trey | September 11, 2009

imagesSo, dear beloved daughter learned to make cinnamon toast in her Wednesday after-school cooking class. She wanted it for breakfast this morning. I said, ok! I loved cinnamon toast as a kid and thought it’d be a nice treat.

So, as is the routine now, I got up at 6am and made her breakfast (of cinnamon toast and grapes), got her stuff ready for school and went to the office (Guy gets her out the door and to school, I pick her up).

Well, apparently I made the cinnamon toast ALL WRONG. You see, there is a right way and a wrong way and I apparently know the wrong way.

I didn’t know this, but apparently you are supposed to mix the sugar and cinnamon together and THEN sprinkle it on the toast. I sprinkle the sugar and then the cinnamon. No, bad bad move.

BUT, and this is veerrrry important, you are supposed to cut out a heart from some paper, put it over the toast before you sprinkle so the cinnamon sugar.

She didn’t’ eat my cinnamon toast (that went to one of us philistines). She made hers the correct way and had that with her grapes.

I’ve been duly corrected.

DOMA’s Repeal

Trey | September 11, 2009

Well, it looks like a bill is about to be introduced to repeal DOMA: DOMA Repeal Bill Coming Next Week | Advocate.com. These things take a while, and of course there is the health care bill and a lot of other things on the national plate, but it’s a step. Repealing DOMA and DADT and the passage of ENDA are _my_ agenda towards full equality before the law. Let’s see if it happens.

It’s the hypocrisy, stupid (oh, and the corruption)

Trey | September 9, 2009

WOW, yet another married Republican lawmaker having yet another lurid affair. Don’t get me wrong, affairs are non-partisan, Democrats and Republicans have them. But, it seems that a LOT of Republicans who are dead set against my marriage have no qualms about screwing theirs up (pun intended?). Like this married Californian assemblyman who has staunchly opposed and fought against marriage equality: GOP lawmaker boasts of torrid affair with lobbyist.

Of course, on top of the hypocrisy, he’s added nice dash of conflict of interest.

Well, as the article says:
Of course, Duvall is strongly opposed to gay marriage. After all, he wants to protect the sanctity of opposite-sex extramarital affairs.
