“Coleslaw is a fascist regime”
That is one answer (below) to the question “Are vegetarian diets OK?”. Marion Nestle’s answer is a bit more reasonable:
This from my favorite food/nutrion writer: Food Politics » Are vegetarian diets OK?. She’s imminently practical and reasonable. Take home message (but read the whole thing) is this: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts, eat a variety of them. Partake in dairy and eggs, you’ll be just perfectly fine nutritionally without any supplements. In fact, very healthy. You’ll also be healthy if you add a bit of meat if you follow the same advice. So yes. Either way, healthwise. As long as you are getting lots of plants and a variety, some eggs/dairy and/or meat, vegetarian or not, you’ll be fine. (she mentions vegan too, her take: you’ll need B12 supplements).
