A Thought On Gay Marriage In Maine – Ta-Nehisi Coates

I wouldn’t call half the country bigots (perhaps a third? ;) , but frankly, half the country or more is motivated by a distrust and/or dislike of gay people. They are motivated by the believe that we are ‘less than’ they. What would you call that?Perhaps, in their heart of hearts, they don’t believe they are bigoted. And maybe that’s not what it is.  I have friends and family who sincerely believe they are not motivated by hate, by distrust, by dislike or by prejudice. They sincerely love and like me and Guy. I believe that. They sincerely believe that their votes (or would-be votes) against our equality, against our being married, against us serving our country are based on some belief in ‘traditional values.’

But I would like them to face a fact. Those traditional values are based on the premise that my sexual orientation, that the person I love and am spending my life with is of the same sex, should be treated not just differently, but less than their lives. “Traditional” values view our love and devotion as inferior.

If you believe that my love, my family, my relationship, in fact, much of what defines my life (as your love, relationships and family define yours) does not deserve to be treated equal under the law, with the same protections, the same rights, the same obligations, then you believe that my love, my family, my relationship is inferior to yours. You believe that I am inferior.

You might like me, you might even love me, but you think I am inferior, that I deserve less than you.

That’s the bottom line. Call it whatever you want.

*sigh* I don’t understand why ‘traditional values’ are such a big deal when so many of these people make a farce of their traditional values every day.
